حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ يَعْنِي الْمُؤَذِّنَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ الْأَذَانُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَقَالَ حَجَّاجٌ يَعْنِي مَرَّتَيْنِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَالْإِقَامَةُ مَرَّةً غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ يَقُولُ قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ وَكُنَّا إِذَا سَمِعْنَا الْإِقَامَةَ تَوَضَّأْنَا ثُمَّ خَرَجْنَا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ لَا أَحْفَظُ غَيْرَ هَذَا حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مُؤَذِّنَ الْعُرْبَانِ فِي مَسْجِدِ بَنِي هِلَالٍ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى مُؤَذِّنِ مَسْجِدِ الْجَامِعِ فَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us, Shu'bah told us: I heard Abu Ja'far - that is, the muezzin - narrating from Muslim Abu al-Muthanna, narrating from Ibn Umar, who said: The adhan in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was only twice. Hajjaj said: meaning twice, twice - and the iqamah was once, except that he would say Prayer has commenced, prayer has commenced. And when we heard the iqamah, we would perform ablution, then go out to the prayer. Shu'bah said: I do not remember anything beyond this. Hajjaj told us, Shu'bah told us: I heard Abu Ja'far, the muezzin of al-Urban at the mosque of Banu Hilal, from Muslim Abu al-Muthanna, the muezzin of the Jami' mosque, relating this hadith.
