قَالَ أَبِي وَأَخْبَرَنَا يَعْنِي يَزِيدَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَعْتَقَ نَصِيبًا لَهُ فِي إِنْسَانٍ أَوْ مَمْلُوكٍ كُلِّفَ عِتْقَ بَقِيَّتِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ يُعْتِقُهُ بِهِ فَقَدْ جَازَ مَا عَتَقَ.
English Translation
My father said: and Yazid informed us, he said: Yahya informed us, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who used to say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever frees his share in a person [i.e., a jointly-owned slave] or a slave is obligated to complete the freeing of the rest of him; and if he has no money with which to free him, then what he freed is valid [as it stands]."
