حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ مِنْ سَرَايَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَاصَ النَّاسُ حَيْصَةً وَكُنْتُ فِيمَنْ حَاصَ فَقُلْنَا كَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ وَقَدْ فَرَرْنَا مِنْ الزَّحْفِ وَبُؤْنَا بِالْغَضَبِ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ دَخَلْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ فَبِتْنَا ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ عَرَضْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ تَوْبَةٌ وَإِلَّا ذَهَبْنَا فَأَتَيْنَاهُ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ مَنْ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا نَحْنُ الْفَرَّارُونَ قَالَ لَا بَلْ أَنْتُمْ الْعَكَّارُونَ أَنَا فِئَتُكُمْ وَأَنَا فِئَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ حَتَّى قَبَّلْنَا يَدَهُ.
English Translation
Hasan narrated to us: Zuhayr narrated to us: Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Abdullah ibn Umar, who said: I was in one of the raiding expeditions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and the people fell into a rout, and I was among those who fled. We said: "What shall we do, having fled from the battle line and incurred wrath?" Then we said: "Let us enter Madinah and spend the night there." Then we said: "Let us rather present ourselves to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him; if there is repentance for us, well and good, otherwise we shall go away." So we came to him before the dawn prayer. He came out and said: "Who are these people?" We said: "We are the ones who fled." He said: "No, rather you are the ones who return to fight again; I am your rallying point, and I am the rallying point of the Muslims." So we came to him until we kissed his hand.
