English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Hajjaj narrated to us, they said: Shu'bah narrated to us — the meaning being the same — Hajjaj said: from Jabalah, and Ibn Ja'far said: I heard Jabalah say: Ibn al-Zubayr used to provide us dates as rations. He said: The people were suffering hardship at that time, so we would eat, and Ibn Umar would pass by us while we were eating and say: Do not combine (two dates at a time), for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade combining. Hajjaj said: he forbade combining, except that a man ask permission of his brother. Shu'bah said: I do not think this statement about asking permission is anything but the words of Ibn Umar himself.
