English Translation
Affan told us, Hammad told us, Thabit informed us, from Anas ibn Malik, from Ibn Mas'ud, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The last one to enter Paradise will be a man who walks sometimes and stumbles sometimes, and the Fire scorches him sometimes. When he passes it, he turns to it and says: 'Blessed is He who saved me from you; Allah has given me something He has not given anyone among the first and the last.' Then a tree is raised for him, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me close to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says to him: 'O son of Adam, perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask me for something else.' He says: 'No, O Lord,' and he pledges not to ask Him for anything else. He said: And his Lord excuses him, because He sees that he cannot bear what he suffers, so He brings him close to it, and he takes shelter in its shade and drinks from its water. Then another tree, more beautiful than the first, is raised for him, and he says: 'O Lord, this one - let me drink from its water and take shelter in its shade; I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'O son of Adam, did you not pledge to Me not to ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'Perhaps if You bring me close to it, I will ask You for something else,' and he pledges not to ask Him for anything else, and his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, excuses him, because He sees that he cannot bear what he suffers, so He brings him close to it, and he takes shelter in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree is raised for him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me close to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water; I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'O son of Adam, did you not pledge to Me not to ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'Yes indeed, O Lord, this one, I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'Perhaps if I bring you close to it, you will ask Me for something else,' and he pledges not to ask Him for anything else, and his Lord excuses him because He sees that he cannot bear what he suffers, so He brings him close to it. When He has brought him close to it, he hears the voices of the people of Paradise, and he says: 'O Lord, admit me into it.' He says: 'O son of Adam, what will put an end to your requests from Me? Would it please you if I gave you the world and its like along with it?' He says: 'O Lord, are You mocking me, while You are the Lord of the worlds?'" He said: Ibn Mas'ud laughed, and said: "Will you not ask me why I am laughing?" They said: "Why are you laughing?" He said: "Thus did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laugh." He said: "'Will you not ask me why I am laughing?' They said: 'Why are you laughing, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'At the laughter of my Lord, when He said, \"Are you mocking me, while You are the Lord of the worlds?\" He says: \"I am not mocking you, but I have power over whatever I will.\"'"
