English Translation
Yazid told us: al-Mas’udi informed us, from Jami’ ibn Shaddad, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Alqamah al-Thaqafi, from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, who said: When we returned from the expedition of al-Hudaybiyah, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Who will guard us tonight?" Abdullah said: I said, "I will," until he repeated it several times, and each time I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then you shall." He said: So I guarded them until, when it was near dawn, the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, overtook me: "You will fall asleep." So I slept, and nothing woke us but the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, got up and did as he used to do regarding ablution and the two rak’ahs of Fajr, then led us in the dawn prayer. When he finished, he said, "Had Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wished that you not sleep, you would not have slept; but He wished that you should be an example for those who come after you — so this is the rule for whoever sleeps or forgets a prayer." He said: Then the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the camels of the people scattered, so the people went out searching for them and brought back their camels, except for the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "Take that direction," so I went where he told me, and I found her halter twisted around a tree in a way that only a hand could have tied it. He said: So I brought her to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth as a Prophet, I found her halter twisted around a tree in a way that only a hand could have tied it." He said: And Surat al-Fath was sent down upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: {Indeed, We have granted you a clear conquest}.
