حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ أُخْتَ الضَّحَّاكِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ أَخْبَرَتْهُ وَكَانَتْ عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي مَخْزُومٍ فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهُ طَلَّقَهَا ثَلَاثًا وَخَرَجَ إِلَى بَعْضِ الْمَغَازِي وَأَمَرَ وَكِيلًا لَهُ أَنْ يُعْطِيَهَا بَعْضَ النَّفَقَةِ فَاسْتَقَلَّتْهَا وَانْطَلَقَتْ إِلَى إِحْدَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهِيَ عِنْدَهَا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذِهِ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ قَيْسٍ طَلَّقَهَا فُلَانٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهَا بِبَعْضِ النَّفَقَةِ فَرَدَّتْهَا وَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ شَيْءٌ تَطَوَّلَ بِهِ قَالَ صَدَقَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ انْتَقِلِي إِلَى مَنْزِلِ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ و قَالَ أَبِي وَقَالَ الْخَفَّافُ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ فَاعْتَدِّي عِنْدَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ يَكْثُرُ عُوَّادُهَا وَلَكِنْ انْتَقِلِي إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْمَى فَانْتَقَلَتْ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَاعْتَدَّتْ عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا أَبُو جَهْمٍ وَمُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَجَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْتَأْمِرُهُ فِيهِمَا فَقَالَ أَبُو جَهْمٍ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكِ قَسْقَاسَتَهُ لِلْعَصَا أَوْ قَالَ أَخَافُ قَصْقَاصَتَهُ لِلْعَصَا وَأَمَّا مُعَاوِيَةُ فَرَجُلٌ أَخْلَقُ مِنْ الْمَالِ فَتَزَوَّجَتْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ.
English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said Ata' informed me, he said Abd al-Rahman ibn Asim ibn Thabit informed me that Fatimah bint Qays, sister of al-Dahhak ibn Qays, informed him - and she was married to a man from Banu Makhzum - that he divorced her three times and went out on a military expedition, and he ordered an agent of his to give her some maintenance, but she considered it too little and went to one of the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered while she was with her, and she said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is Fatimah bint Qays; so-and-so divorced her, and he sent to her some maintenance, but she returned it, and he claims it was something extra he gave voluntarily." He said, "He is right." Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Move to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum" - and my father said, and al-Khaffaf said "Umm Kulthum" - "and observe your waiting period there," then he said, "No, Umm Kulthum is visited frequently by visitors, but move to Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, for he is blind." So she moved to Abdullah and observed her waiting period with him until her waiting period ended. Then Abu Jahm and Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan proposed to her, so she came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to consult him about the two of them. He said, "Abu Jahm - I fear for you his frequent use of the stick," or he said, "I fear his frequent striking with the stick; and as for Mu'awiyah, he is a man of scant means." So she married Usamah ibn Zayd after that.
