English Translation
Surayj ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us: Hammad - meaning Ibn Zayd - narrated to us, from Abd al-Kabir ibn al-Hakam al-Ghifari and Abdullah ibn Ubayd, from Udaysah, from her father: Ali ibn Abi Talib came and stood at the door and said, "Is Abu Muslim there?" It was said, "Yes." He said, "O Abu Muslim, what keeps you from taking your share in this matter and joining it?" He said, "What keeps me from that is a pledge that my close companion and your cousin made me swear - he charged me that when strife occurs, I should take up a sword made of wood, and I have indeed taken it up, and it is that one hanging there."
