حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ قَالَتْ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسَاءٍ نُبَايِعُهُ فَأَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا مَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ أَنْ لَا نُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا الْآيَةَ قَالَ فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَعْتُنَّ قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَا تُصَافِحُنَا قَالَ إِنِّي لَا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ كَقَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ.
English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Muhammad - meaning Ibn al-Munkadir - from Umaymah bint Ruqayqah, she said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with women to pledge allegiance to him, and he took from us the pledge of what is in the Qur'an, that we would not associate anything with Allah - the verse. He said: As much as you are able and willing. We said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves. We said: O Messenger of Allah, will you not shake hands with us? He said: I do not shake hands with women; my word to one woman is like my word to a hundred women.
