حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بِمِنًى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَصَابَتْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ عِنْدَكَ أَحْتَسِبُ مُصِيبَتِي فَأْجُرْنِي فِيهَا وَأَبْدِلْنِي بِهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ قُلْتُهَا فَجَعَلْتُ كُلَّمَا بَلَغْتُ وَأَبْدِلْنِي بِهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي وَمَنْ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ثُمَّ قُلْتُهَا فَلَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَخْطُبُهَا فَلَمْ تَزَوَّجْهُ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ أَخْبِرْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى وَأَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدًا فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْ لَهَا أَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى فَأَدْعُو اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَيُذْهِبُ غَيْرَتَكِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ فَسَتُكْفَيْنَ صِبْيَانَكِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكِ شَاهِدًا فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكِ شَاهِدٌ وَلَا غَائِبٌ يَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ.
English Translation
Yazid b. Harun told us: Hammad b. Salamah informed us, from Thabit al-Bunani, who said: Ibn Umar b. Abi Salamah told me at Mina, from his father, from Umm Salamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever is struck by a calamity, let him say: 'Truly we belong to Allah, and truly to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I reckon my calamity, so reward me for it, and give me something better in exchange for it.'" When Abu Salamah died, I said it, and every time I reached "and give me something better in exchange for it," I would say to myself, "Who is better than Abu Salamah?" Then I said it anyway. When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr sent to propose to her, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Umar b. al-Khattab to propose to her on his behalf. She said, "Tell the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that I am a jealous woman, that I have young children, and that none of my guardians is present." So he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He said: "Go back to her and tell her: as for your saying that you are jealous, I will call upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to remove your jealousy; as for your saying that you have young children, your children will be provided for; and as for your saying that none of your guardians is present, none of your guardians, present or absent, would dislike this."
