English Translation
Ibn Abbas said: Allah, Blessed and Most High, did not grant victory in any battle as He granted victory on the day of Uhud. We found that surprising, so Ibn Abbas said: 'Between me and whoever denies that is the Book of Allah, Blessed and Most High. Indeed Allah the Almighty says regarding the day of Uhud: And certainly Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission (3:152).' Ibn Abbas said: 'Al-Hass means killing.' (The verse continues:) 'Until when you lost courage... to His saying: And Allah has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers (3:152).' This referred to the archers, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed them in a position and said: 'Guard our rear. If you see us being killed, do not come to our aid; and if you see us gaining spoils, do not join in.' When the Prophet (peace be upon him) gained victory and the Muslims entered the polytheists' camp, all the archers rushed in to plunder. The ranks of the Companions became intertwined. When the archers left the gap they had been guarding, the cavalry entered from that position upon the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and they began striking one another in confusion, and many Muslims were killed. The Muslims had the upper hand at the beginning of the day, until seven or nine of the bearers of the polytheists' banner were killed. The Muslims then retreated toward the mountain — they did not reach the cave as people say, but were only below al-Mihras. The Shaytan called out: Muhammad has been killed! And no one doubted that it was true. We remained like that, not doubting he had been killed, until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) appeared between the two Sa'ds — we recognized him by his gait. We were so overjoyed it was as if nothing had befallen us. He came toward us saying: The anger of Allah is severe upon a people who bloodied the face of His Messenger. And he said another time: O Allah, it is not for them to prevail over us — until he reached us. He stayed a while, then Abu Sufyan called out from the bottom of the mountain: Exalted is Hubal! (twice, meaning their idol.) Where is Ibn Abi Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abi Quhafah? Where is Ibn al-Khattab? Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I not answer him? He said: Yes. When he (Abu Sufyan) said: Exalted is Hubal!, Umar said: Allah is more exalted and more majestic. Abu Sufyan said: O Ibn al-Khattab, matters have turned in our favor, so leave off — or so it seems. He said: Where is Ibn Abi Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abi Quhafah? Where is Ibn al-Khattab? Umar said: This is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), this is Abu Bakr, and here I am, Umar. Abu Sufyan said: A day in return for the day of Badr — fortunes alternate, and war goes back and forth. Umar said: They are not equal — our dead are in Paradise and your dead are in the Fire. He (Abu Sufyan) said: You claim that? Then we have surely lost and been ruined. Then Abu Sufyan said: You will find mutilation among your dead — that was not by the decision of our chiefs. Then the pride of Jahiliyyah overcame him and he said: Well, it did happen, and we did not dislike it.'
