حَدَّثَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ بُرْقَانَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ الزُّهْرِيَّ عَنْ الرَّجُلِ يُخَيِّرُ امْرَأَتَهُ فَتَخْتَارُهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ أَتَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَأَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكِ أَمْرًا فَلَا عَلَيْكِ أَنْ لَا تَعْجَلِي فِيهِ حَتَّى تُشَاوِرِي أَبَوَيْكِ فَقُلْتُ وَمَا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ قَالَتْ فَتَلَا عَلَيَّ { يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا فَتَعَالَيْنَ أُمَتِّعْكُنَّ وَأُسَرِّحْكُنَّ سَرَاحًا جَمِيلًا وَإِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلْمُحْسِنَاتِ مِنْكُنَّ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا } قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقُلْتُ وَفِي أَيِّ ذَلِكَ تَأْمُرُنِي أُشَاوِرُ أَبَوَيَّ بَلْ أُرِيدُ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ قَالَتْ فَسُرَّ بِذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَعْجَبَهُ وَقَالَ سَأَعْرِضُ عَلَى صَوَاحِبِكِ مَا عَرَضْتُ عَلَيْكِ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَلَا تُخْبِرْهُنَّ بِالَّذِي اخْتَرْتُ فَلَمْ يَفْعَلْ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ لَهُنَّ كَمَا قَالَ لِعَائِشَةَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ قَدْ اخْتَارَتْ عَائِشَةُ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ قَدْ خَيَّرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ نَرَ ذَلِكَ طَلَاقًا.
English Translation
Kathir ibn Hisham told us, he said: Ja'far ibn Burqan told us, he said: I asked al-Zuhri about a man who gives his wife the choice and she chooses him. He said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from Aisha, she said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to me and said, "I am going to present something to you, and there is no harm if you do not hasten in it until you consult your parents." I said, "What is this matter?" She said: Then he recited to me: {O Prophet, say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you with a fair release. But if you desire Allah and His Messenger and the abode of the Hereafter, then indeed Allah has prepared for the doers of good among you a great reward.} Aisha said: So I said, "About what matter do you command me to consult my parents? Rather, I desire Allah and His Messenger and the abode of the Hereafter." She said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was pleased with that, and it delighted him, and he said, "I shall present to your companions what I have presented to you." She said: So I said to him, "Then do not tell them what I chose." But he did not do that; rather he would say to them just as he had said to Aisha, then say, "Aisha has chosen Allah and His Messenger and the abode of the Hereafter." Aisha said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave us the choice, but we did not consider that to be a divorce."
