English Translation
Musa ibn Salamah said: I performed Hajj along with Sinan ibn Salamah, and Sinan had a sacrificial camel that became exhausted and could not walk. He was at a loss about what to do. I said: 'When I reach Makkah, I will surely investigate this matter.' When we arrived in Makkah, I said: 'Let us go to Ibn Abbas.' We entered upon him while a slave-girl was with him. I had two matters to ask about and my companion had one. He said: 'Shall I give you privacy?' I said: 'No.' I said: 'I had a sacrificial camel that became exhausted on us.' Ibn Abbas said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent the sacrificial camels with so-and-so and gave him instructions about them. When he was about to leave, he came back and said: O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with those that become exhausted? He said: Slaughter them, dip their shoes (identification marks) in their blood, and strike it on their sides, and do not eat from them — neither you nor anyone from your travel party.' I said to him: 'I go on military expeditions and receive spoils; can I free a slave on behalf of my mother — will it count for her?' Ibn Abbas said: 'The wife of Salman ibn Abdullah al-Juhani asked him to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about her mother who died without having performed Hajj — would it count if she performed Hajj on her behalf? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What if her mother had a debt and she paid it off — would that count on her mother's behalf? He said: Yes. He said: Then let her perform Hajj on behalf of her mother.' And he (the man) asked him about sea water, and he said: 'Sea water is purifying.'
