English Translation
Aisha said: The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered together and sent Fatimah to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), telling her to say to him, "Your wives implore you, for the sake of Allah, to be just concerning the daughter of Abu Quhafah." She went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was with Aisha under her cloak, and said to him, "Your wives have sent me to you; they implore you, for Allah's sake, to be just concerning the daughter of Abu Quhafah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, "Do you love me?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Then love her." So she went back to them and told them what he had said to her. They said, "You have accomplished nothing - go back to him." She said, "By Allah, I will never go back to him about her again." Az-Zuhri said: And she truly was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So they sent Zaynab bint Jahsh - Aisha said she was the one among the Prophet's wives who used to rival me in standing with him. She said [to the Prophet], "Your wives have sent me to you; they implore you, for Allah's sake, to be just concerning the daughter of Abu Quhafah." Then she turned on me and began reviling me, while I kept watching the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and looking at the corner of his eye, to see whether he would permit me to defend myself against her. He said nothing, and she went on reviling me until I felt sure he would not mind if I stood up for myself, so I answered her back, and before long I had silenced her. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, "She is the daughter of Abu Bakr." Aisha said: And I never saw a woman better than her - more given to charity, more devoted to keeping family ties, and more generous of herself in every act that draws one closer to Allah, Mighty and Majestic - than Zaynab, apart from a hastiness of temper she had, from which she would quickly return.
