English Translation
Aisha said: "The day of Ashura was a day that the Quraysh used to fast during the pre-Islamic period, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to fast it. When he came to Madinah, he fasted it and ordered (others) to fast it. When the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, Ramadan became the obligatory fast and Ashura was abandoned. Whoever wished could fast it, and whoever wished could leave it."
