English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to me, from Muhammad bin Ishaq: Muhammad bin Ja'far bin az-Zubayr narrated to me, who said: I heard Ziyad bin Damrah bin Sa'id as-Sulami narrating to Urwah bin az-Zubayr, from his father Damrah and from his grandfather — and both of them had witnessed Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in the noon prayer, then went to the shade of a tree and sat in it, at Hunayn. Al-Aqra' bin Habis and Uyaynah bin Hisn bin Hudhayfah bin Badr came to him disputing over Amir bin al-Adbat al-Ashja'i — Uyaynah demanding blood-vengeance for Amir, being at that time chief of Ghatafan, while al-Aqra' bin Habis defended Muhallam bin Jaththamah because of his standing among Khindif. They took turns presenting their dispute before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while we listened. We heard Uyaynah saying: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I will not leave him until I make his women taste the heat that my women tasted. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was saying: Rather, you shall take the blood-money — fifty camels during this journey of ours, and fifty when we return. He refused, when a man of Banu Layth stood up, called Mukaytil, a short, stocky man, and said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah I have found no likeness for this slain man in the dawn of Islam except like sheep coming to water, the first of which were struck so the rest fled in fright — set a precedent today and change it tomorrow. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hand, then said: Rather, you shall take the blood-money — fifty during this journey of ours, and fifty when we return. So they accepted the blood-money, then said: Where is your companion, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, may seek forgiveness for him? A man stood up, dark-skinned, tall and well-built, wearing a fine garment which he had prepared for the possibility of being killed, until he sat before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: What is your name? He said: I am Muhallam bin Jaththamah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hand, then said: O Allah, do not forgive Muhallam bin Jaththamah. So he got up, wiping away his tears with the edge of his cloak. As for us among ourselves, we say: We hope that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did seek forgiveness for him privately; but as for what was shown openly by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, it was this.
