English Translation
Yazid narrated to us, al-Walid -- meaning Ibn 'Abdullah ibn Jumay' -- informed us from Abu al-Tufayl who said: When the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, came back from the expedition of Tabuk, he ordered a caller to announce: "The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, is taking the mountain pass, so let no one else take it." While the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was being led by Hudhayfa and driven from behind by 'Ammar, a group of masked men on riding camels suddenly approached and surrounded 'Ammar as he was driving the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, along. 'Ammar began striking the faces of their mounts. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Hudhayfa, "Enough, enough," until the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, went down the slope. When the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, had gone down, he dismounted, and 'Ammar came back. He said, "O 'Ammar, did you recognize the people?" He said, "I recognized most of the mounts, but the people were masked." He said, "Do you know what they intended?" He said, "God and His Messenger know best." He said, "They intended to startle the mount of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and throw him down." He said: 'Ammar then asked a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, "I ask you by God, how many do you know were the men of the mountain pass?" He said, "Fourteen." He said, "If you were among them, then they were fifteen." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, named three of them. They said, "By God, we did not hear the caller of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and we did not know what the people intended." 'Ammar said, "I bear witness that the remaining twelve are at war with God and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand." Al-Walid said: Abu al-Tufayl also mentioned regarding that expedition that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the people -- when he was told that water was scarce -- the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered a caller to announce that no one should come to the water before the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, came to it and found that a group had already come to it before him, and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed them that day.
