حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ يَعْنِي الصَّوَّافَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ ابْنِ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَتِيكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنْ الْغَيْرَةِ مَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ وَمِنْهَا مَا يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ وَمِنْ الْخُيَلَاءِ مَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ وَمِنْهَا مَا يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ فَأَمَّا الْغَيْرَةُ الَّتِي يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ فَالْغَيْرَةُ فِي رِيبَةٍ وَأَمَّا الَّتِي يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ فَالْغَيْرَةُ فِي غَيْرِ الرِّيبَةِ وَأَمَّا الْخُيَلَاءُ الَّتِي يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَتَخَيَّلَ الْعَبْدُ بِنَفْسِهِ لِلَّهِ عِنْدَ الْقِتَالِ وَأَنْ يَتَخَيَّلَ بِالصَّدَقَةِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْبٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ شَدَّادٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْقُرَشِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَتِيكٍ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَخْبَرَهُ وَكَانَ أَبُوهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ مِنْ الْغَيْرَةِ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ وَقَالَ الْخُيَلَاءُ الَّتِي يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ اخْتِيَالُ الرَّجُلِ فِي الْقِتَالِ وَاخْتِيَالُهُ فِي الصَّدَقَةِ وَالْخُيَلَاءُ الَّتِي يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ الْخُيَلَاءُ فِي الْبَغْيِ أَوْ قَالَ فِي الْفَخْرِ.
English Translation
Isma'il told us, from al-Hajjaj -- that is, al-Sawwaf -- from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from Ibn Jabir ibn Atik al-Ansari, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a kind of jealousy that Allah loves, and a kind that Allah hates; and there is a kind of pride that Allah loves, and a kind that Allah hates. As for the jealousy that Allah loves, it is jealousy in a matter of suspicion; as for the jealousy that Allah hates, it is jealousy without suspicion. As for the pride that Allah loves, it is that a servant carry himself proudly for Allah's sake in battle, and that he carry himself proudly in giving charity." Abd al-Samad told us: Harb -- that is, Ibn Shaddad -- told us: Yahya -- that is, Ibn Abi Kathir -- told us: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Qurashi told us: Ibn Jabir ibn Atik told me that his father informed him -- and his father was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) -- that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a kind of jealousy..." and he mentioned its meaning, and he said: "The pride that Allah loves is a man's display of pride in battle and his display of pride in charity, and the pride that Allah hates is pride in wrongdoing," or he said, "in boasting."
