English Translation
It was narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Ja'far, who said: It was narrated to us by Shu'bah, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu al-Bakhtari al-Ta'i, from Abu Thawr, who said: On the day of al-Jara'ah, Uthman sent Sa'id ibn al-As, so the people went out to him and turned him back. He said: I was sitting with Abu Mas'ud and Hudhayfah, and Abu Mas'ud said: "I did not think he would return without blood being shed there." He said: Hudhayfah said: "But I have known that it would return upon its heels without so much as a cupping-glass of blood being shed in it, and I did not know any of that except that I learned it while Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was alive - [he said] until a man wakes up a believer, then by evening has nothing of it left with him; and is an evening believer, then wakes up with nothing of it left with him; he fights his own group today, and Allah kills him tomorrow; his heart is turned upside down, its underside rising to its top." He said: I said: "Its underside?" He said: "Its backside."
