English Translation
Yazid told us: al-Mas'udi informed us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, who said: There was some matter between people of the Ansar, so the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, went to them to make peace between them. The time for prayer came, and Bilal came to Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr, the prayer time has come and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, is not here — shall I give the call and the iqamah, and you step forward and lead the prayer? He said: Do as you wish. So Abu Bakr stepped forward and began the prayer. Then the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived, and the people began clapping to alert Abu Bakr, so Abu Bakr made to withdraw, but the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him to stay in his place. Abu Bakr nevertheless withdrew, and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped forward and led the prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying when I motioned to you? He said: It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to stand ahead of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: And why did you all clap? They said: To alert Abu Bakr. He said: Clapping is for women, and saying 'Subhan Allah' is for men.
