English Translation

Abdullah told us, my father told me, Aswad ibn 'Amir told us, Sharik told us, from Ibn 'Umayr - Abd al-Malik - from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed a prayer in which he performed the bowing, the prostration, and the standing most beautifully. I mentioned that to him, and he said: "This is a prayer of hope and fear. I asked my Lord in it for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to destroy my community by a year of famine that would annihilate them, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to give power over them to an enemy from outside themselves, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to make their violence occur among themselves, and He refused me that."
