English Translation

Abdullah told us, my father told me, Harun ibn Ma'ruf told us — Abdullah said: and I also heard it from Harun — Ibn Wahb told us, Yahya ibn Ayyub informed me, from Ubaydullah ibn Zahr, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Rafi' al-Tanukhi, the judge of Ifriqiyah, that Mu'adh ibn Jabal came to Syria while the people of Syria were not performing the Witr prayer. He said to Mu'awiyah, "Why is it that I see the people of Syria not performing the Witr?" Mu'awiyah said, "Is that obligatory upon them?" He said, "Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'My Lord, Mighty and Sublime, has increased me with a prayer, and it is the Witr, whose time is between the night prayer and the rising of dawn.'"
