English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi told us, from Sufyan, from Zayd b. Aslam, from Yazid b. Nu'aym, from his father, that Ma'iz b. Malik came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "Carry out upon me the ordinance of the Book of Allah." He turned away from him four times, then ordered that he be stoned. When the stones touched him — 'Abd al-Rahman said, and once he said: "When the stones bit into him" — he panicked and ran off fleeing. 'Abdullah b. Unays, or Anas b. Nadiyah, went out and threw the shin-bone of a donkey at him, knocking him down. He came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what had happened, and he said: "Why did you not leave him be? Perhaps he would have repented and Allah would have accepted his repentance." Then he said: "O Hazzal, had you covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you."
