حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَقِيلِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ هَيْضَمٍ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَفْدٍ لَا يَرَوْنَ إِلَّا أَنِّي أَفْضَلُهُمْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَزْعُمُ أَنَّكُمْ مِنَّا قَالَ نَحْنُ بَنُو النَّضْرِ بْنُ كِنَانَةَ لَا نَقْفُو أُمَّنَا وَلَا نَنْتَفِي مِنْ أَبِينَا قَالَ فَكَانَ الْأَشْعَثُ يَقُولُ لَا أُوتَى بِرَجُلٍ نَفَى قُرَيْشًا مِنْ النَّضْرِ بْنِ كِنَانَةَ إِلَّا جَلَدْتُهُ الْحَدَّ.
English Translation
Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Aqil ibn Talhah, from Muslim ibn Haydham, from al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with a delegation, none of whom saw themselves as anything but that I was their best. I said: O Messenger of Allah, we claim that you are from us. He said: We are Banu al-Nadr ibn Kinanah; we do not trace our lineage away from our mother nor deny our father. He said: Al-Ash'ath used to say: No man will be brought to me who denies that Quraysh descend from al-Nadr ibn Kinanah, but I will flog him with the full legal punishment.
