حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ السَّمَّانُ ابْنُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي الْحُسَامِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ عَنِ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَثَلِي فِي النَّبِيِّينَ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ ابْتَنَى دَارًا فَأَحْسَنَهَا وَأَجْمَلَهَا وَأَكْلَمَهَا وَتَرَكَ مِنْهَا مَوْضِعَ لَبِنَةٍ لَمْ يَضَعْهَا فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَطُوفُونَ بِالْبُنْيَانِ وَيَعْجَبُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ لَوْ تَمَّ مَوْضِعُ هَذِهِ اللَّبِنَةِ.
English Translation
Sa'id ibn al-Ash'ath ibn Sa'id al-Samman, Ibn Abi al-Rabi', told us, Sa'id ibn Salamah — that is, Ibn Abi al-Husam — informed us, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil told us, from al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Ka'b, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "My likeness among the prophets is that of a man who built a house, making it beautiful, handsome, and complete, but left from it the space of one brick, not placing it. So people began to go around the building, marveling, and saying, 'If only the place of this brick were completed.'"
