English Translation
Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, Awf told us, from al-Hasan, from Utayy, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: I saw a man boast in the presence of Ubayy with the boasting of pre-Islamic days, taking pride in his father, so Ubayy rebuked him crudely regarding his father, without euphemism. Then he said to them, "Indeed, I see what is in your minds; I cannot do otherwise. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'Whoever boasts with the boasting of pre-Islamic days, rebuke him crudely and do not use euphemism.'" Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Isa ibn Yunus told us, from Awf, from al-Hasan, from Utayy, from Ubayy, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of it. Isma'il told us, from Yunus, from al-Hasan, from Utayy, that a man boasted with the boasting of pre-Islamic days, and he mentioned the hadith. Ubayy said, "We used to be commanded, whenever a man boasted with the boasting of pre-Islamic days, to rebuke him crudely regarding his father and not use euphemism." Abdullah told us, Ubaydullah ibn Umar ibn Maysarah told us, Yazid ibn Zurayi' told us, Yunus told us, from al-Hasan, from Utayy, who said: Ubayy said, "We used to be commanded, when a man boasted of lineage," and he mentioned the like of it.
