حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ وَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ أَنَّ الْفُتْيَا الَّتِي كَانُوا يُفْتُونَ بِهَا فِي قَوْلِهِمْ الْمَاءُ مِنْ الْمَاءِ رُخْصَةٌ كَانَ أُرْخِصَ بِهَا فِي أَوَّلِ الْإِسْلَامِ ثُمَّ أُمِرْنَا بِالِاغْتِسَالِ بَعْدَهَا حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَهْلٍ عَنْ أُبَيٍّ نَحْوَهُ قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ فَأَخْبَرَنِي مَعْمَرٌ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ نَحْوَهُ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ قَالَ سَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ وَكَانَ قَدْ بَلَغَ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَمِعَ مِنْهُ أَخْبَرَنِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ.
English Translation
'Ali ibn Ishaq told us, 'Abdullah -- that is Ibn al-Mubarak -- informed us, Yunus informed me, from al-Zuhri, from Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Ansari, who had met the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he was fifteen years old, who said: Ubayy ibn Ka'b told me that the ruling by which they used to give fatwa, saying "water follows only from water," was a concession granted at the beginning of Islam, and then we were commanded to perform ghusl after it. Khalaf ibn al-Walid told us, Ibn al-Mubarak told us, from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Sahl, from Ubayy, similarly. Ibn al-Mubarak said: Ma'mar informed me with this same chain, similarly. Muhammad ibn Bakr told us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, who said: Ibn Shihab said: Sahl ibn Sa'd said -- and he had reached fifteen years of age when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died, and he had heard from him -- Ubayy ibn Ka'b informed me, and he mentioned the like of it.
