حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ عَنْ أَبِي نَوْفَلِ بْنِ أَبِي عَقْرَبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الصَّوْمِ فَقَالَ صُمْ يَوْمًا مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ فَاسْتَزَادَهُ فَقَالَ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي أَقْوَى فَزِدْنِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا فَمَا كَانَ أَنْ يَزِيدَهُ فَاسْتَزَادَهُ فَقَالَ صُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ قَالَ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا فَمَا كَانَ أَنْ يَزِيدَهُ فَلَمَّا أَلْحَمَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ.
English Translation
Yazid ibn Harun told us, al-Aswad ibn Shayban informed us, from Abu Nawfal ibn Abi 'Aqrab, from his father: that he asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about fasting, and he said, "Fast one day of every month." He asked for more, saying, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I find myself strong, so give me more." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I find myself strong, I find myself strong" -- but he did not increase it for him. So he asked for more again, and he said, "Fast two days of every month." He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, I find myself strong." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I find myself strong, I find myself strong" -- but he did not increase it for him. Then when he pressed him persistently, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Fast three days of every month."
