English Translation
Muhanna ibn Abd al-Hamid Abu Shibl told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Abu Qaza'ah, from Hakim ibn Mu'awiyah, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There was a man among those who came before you whom Allah, Blessed and Exalted, had blessed abundantly with wealth and children, until one era passed and another era came. When death approached him, he said: 'O my sons, what kind of father was I to you?' They said: 'The best of fathers.' He said: 'Will you obey me?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'See to it, when I die, that you burn me until you reduce me to charcoal.'" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "So they did that. Then, 'crush me with a pestle'" - gesturing with his hand - the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "and they did that, by Allah. Then, 'scatter me in the sea on a windy day, that perhaps I may escape Allah, Blessed and Exalted.'" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "and they did that, by Allah. And there he was in the grasp of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and He said: 'O son of Adam, what led you to do what you did?' He said: 'My Lord, fear of You.'" He said: "So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, forgave him because of that."
