English Translation
Al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, Sukain ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from Sayyar ibn Salamah Abu al-Minhal al-Riyahi, who said: I entered with my father upon Abu Barzah al-Aslami while I still had earrings in my ears that day, and I was a young boy. Abu Barzah said: 'I praise Allah that I have come to blame this tribe of Quraysh. So-and-so here fights for worldly gain, and so-and-so here fights for worldly gain' — meaning Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan — until he mentioned Ibn al-Azraq. Then he said: 'The most beloved people to me are this band who cover their heads in dust, whose stomachs are empty of the wealth of the Muslims, and whose backs are light of their blood.' He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The leaders are from Quraysh, the leaders are from Quraysh, the leaders are from Quraysh. I have rights over them and they have rights over you, as long as they do three things: when they judge, they are just; when mercy is sought from them, they show mercy; and when they make a covenant, they fulfill it. Whoever among them does not do this, then upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.'
