حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَن أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ يَقُولُ أَوْصَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ فَإِنْ مَاتَ مَاتَ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَخْبَرَنِي عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَن الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ.
English Translation
Abd al-Rahman and Ibn Ja'far told us, they said: Shu'bah told us, from Abu Ishaq, he said: I heard al-Bara' ibn Azib say: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed a man that when he takes to his bed he should say: "O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, turned my face towards You, committed my affair to You, and entrusted my back to You, out of desire and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and Your Prophet whom You sent." So if he dies, he dies upon the natural disposition. Abd al-Rahman and Ibn Ja'far told us, they said: Shu'bah told us, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Sa'd ibn Ubaydah, from al-Bara', from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of that. Ibn Ja'far said: Shu'bah said: And he informed me, from al-Hasan, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, with the like of that.
