English Translation
Hasan ibn Musa told us, Zuhayr told us, Abu Ishaq told us, that al-Bara' ibn 'Azib said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placed 'Abdullah ibn Jubayr in charge of the archers on the day of Uhud, and they were fifty men. He stationed them in a position and said, "If you see us being snatched away by the birds, do not leave this place until I send for you, and if you see us prevailing over the enemy and trampling them, do not leave this place until I send for you." He said: they routed them. He said: and by Allah, I saw the women fleeing up the mountain, their calves and anklets showing as they lifted their garments. The companions of 'Abdullah ibn Jubayr said, "The spoils, O people, the spoils! Your companions have prevailed, what are you waiting for?" 'Abdullah ibn Jubayr said, "Have you forgotten what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to you?" They said, "By Allah, we will indeed go to the people and take our share of the spoils." When they came to them, their faces were turned back and they came fleeing in defeat, and that is when the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, was calling out to them from behind. None remained with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, except twelve men. They inflicted losses of seventy men upon us, while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions had inflicted upon the polytheists on the day of Badr one hundred and forty - seventy captives and seventy killed. Abu Sufyan said, "Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people?" three times, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade them to answer him. Then he said, "Is the son of Abu Quhafah among the people? Is the son of Abu Quhafah among the people? Is the son of al-Khattab among the people? Is the son of al-Khattab among the people?" Then he turned to his companions and said, "As for these, they have been killed, and you have been spared their presence." 'Umar could not restrain himself and said, "You lie, by Allah, O enemy of Allah! Those you have named are all alive, and there remains for you what will grieve you." He said, "A day for the day of Badr, and war is turns of fortune between two sides. You will find mutilation among the dead which I did not order, but which did not displease me." Then he began to chant, "Exalted be Hubal! Exalted be Hubal!" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Will you not answer him?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what shall we say?" He said, "Say: Allah is more exalted and more majestic." He said, "We have al-'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Will you not answer him?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what shall we say?" He said, "Say: Allah is our protector, and you have no protector."
