English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us: My father narrated to us, from Salih, who said: Ibn Shihab said: Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah narrated to me, from Ibn Abbas, from Ammar ibn Yasir, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, halted for the night at Ulat al-Jaysh, with A'ishah his wife accompanying him, and a necklace of hers made of Zafar beads broke and was lost. The people were held back seeking her necklace, until dawn broke, and the people had no water with them. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down upon His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, the concession of purification with clean earth. The Muslims stood with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and struck the ground with their hands, then raised their hands without taking hold of any of the dust, and wiped their faces and their hands up to the shoulders, and from the palms of their hands up to the armpits - and let no one be deceived by this (exaggerated description). It has reached us that Abu Bakr said to A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with them both: By Allah, I did not know that you were a source of blessing.
