حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ أَشْوَعَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي كَاتِبُ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ كَتَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ أَنْ اكْتُبْ إِلَيَّ بِشَيْءٍ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَرِهَ لَكُمْ قِيلَ وَقَالَ وَإِضَاعَةَ الْمَالِ وَكَثْرَةَ السُّؤَالِ.
English Translation
Isma'il told us, Khalid al-Hadhdha told us, Ibn Ashwa' told me, from al-Sha'bi, who said: The scribe of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah told me: Mu'awiyah wrote to al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, "Write to me something you heard from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him." So he wrote to him: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "God has disliked for you gossip and idle talk, wasting wealth, and excessive questioning."
