English Translation

al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad told us, Abd al-Hamid — meaning Ibn Ja'far — told us, he said: Yazid ibn Abi Habib told us, Marthad ibn Abdullah al-Yazani told us, he said: al-Daylami told us, that he asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him — he said, "We are in a cold land, and we make use of a drink made for us from wheat." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not drink it." He repeated it a second time, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not drink it." He repeated it a third time, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not drink it." He said, "But they cannot abstain from it." He said, "If they cannot abstain from it, then fight them."
