English Translation

Ibn Numayr told us, Sayf told us, he said: I heard Adi ibn Adi al-Kindi narrating from Mujahid, he said: A freedman (mawla) of ours told me that he heard Adi say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not punish the common people for the deed of the select few until they see wrongdoing being done in their midst, while being able to forbid it, yet they do not forbid it; then when they do that, Allah punishes both the select and the common people. Yazid ibn Haroun told us, from Jarir ibn Hazim, he said: Adi ibn Adi told me, from Raja' ibn Haywah and al-Urs ibn Amirah, from his father Adi, and he related the hadith. Jarir said: and Ayyub added to me — and we were all together when we heard the hadith from Adi — he said: Adi said: and al-Urs ibn Amirah told us, and then this verse was revealed: {Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price...} to its end — but I did not memorize it that day from Adi.
