حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ صَالِحٍ عَنْ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ الْقَاسِمِ مَوْلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَقُودُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَاحِلَتَهُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَقَالَ يَا عُقْبَةُ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ خَيْرَ سُورَتَيْنِ قُرِئَتَا قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ صَلَّى بِهِمَا صَلَاةَ الْغَدَاةِ قَالَ كَيْفَ تَرَى يَا عُقْبَةُ.
English Translation
Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, from Mu'awiyah — meaning Ibn Salih — from al-Ala' ibn al-Harith, from al-Qasim, the freed slave of Mu'awiyah, from Uqbah ibn Amir, who said: I was leading the Messenger of Allah's, peace and blessings be upon him, mount during a journey, and he said: O Uqbah, shall I not teach you the best two surahs ever recited? I said: Yes indeed. He said: Say 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak' and 'Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.' Then when he dismounted, he led them in the dawn prayer with the two of them, and said: What do you think, O Uqbah?
