English Translation
Hashim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to us, he said: I heard a man relate from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "There is no man who dies, at the time of his death, with an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart, but that Paradise will be forbidden to him, so that he will not smell its scent nor see it." A man of Quraysh called Abu Rayhanah said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I love beauty and desire it, so much that I even love it in the strap of my whip and in the thong of my sandal." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "That is not arrogance; Allah, Mighty and Sublime, is beautiful and loves beauty. Rather, arrogance is one who disdains the truth and despises people."
