English Translation

Ghundar told us, saying: Ikrimah ibn Ammar told us, saying: Shaddad ibn Abdullah told me — he had lived to meet a number of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him — from Abu Umamah, from Amr ibn Abasah, who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me from what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has taught you." He said: "When you have prayed the dawn prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun rises; for when it rises, it rises between the two horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. When it has risen the height of a spear or two spears, then pray, for prayer at that time is witnessed and attended (by angels), until — that is — the shadow of the spear stands still (at noon); then refrain from prayer, for at that time Hell is stoked. Then when the shadow lengthens (after noon), pray, for prayer then is witnessed and attended, until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then when you have prayed the afternoon prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it."
