حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاَقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ شِيَيْمِ بْنِ بَيْتَانَ قَالَ كَانَ مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ مُخَلَّدٍ عَلَى أَسْفَلِ الْأَرْضِ قَالَ فَاسْتَعْمَلَ رُوَيْفِعَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ فَسِرْنَا مَعَهُ مِنْ شَرِيكٍ إِلَى كَوْمِ عَلْقَامَ أَوْ مِنْ كَوْمِ عَلْقَامَ إِلَى شَرِيكٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ رُوَيْفِعُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ كُنَّا نَغْزُو عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَيَأْخُذُ أَحَدُنَا جَمَلَ أَخِيهِ عَلَى أَنَّ لَهُ النِّصْفَ مِمَّا يَغْنَمُ قَالَ حَتَّى أَنَّ أَحَدَنَا لَيَصِيرُ لَهُ الْقِدْحُ وَلِلْآخَرِ النَّصْلُ وَالرِّيشُ قَالَ فَقَالَ رُوَيْفِعُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا رُوَيْفِعُ لَعَلَّ الْحَيَاةَ سَتَطُولُ بِكَ فَأَخْبِرْ النَّاسَ أَنَّهُ مَنْ عَقَدَ لِحْيَتَهُ أَوْ تَقَلَّدَ وَتَرًا أَوْ اسْتَنْجَى بِرَجِيعِ دَابَّةٍ أَوْ عَظْمٍ فَقَدْ بَرِئَ مِمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
English Translation
Yahya ibn Ishaq told us, saying: Ibn Lahi'ah told us, from Ayyash ibn Abbas, from Shuyaym ibn Baytan, who said: Maslamah ibn Mukhallad was (governor) over the lower land, and he appointed Ruwayfi' ibn Thabit al-Ansari (as deputy). We traveled with him from Shurayk to Kawm Alqam, or from Kawm Alqam to Shurayk. Ruwayfi' ibn Thabit said: "We used to go on campaigns in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and one of us would take his brother's camel on (the condition) that he would have half of what he gained (in spoils)" — he said: "so much so that one of us would end up with the arrow-shaft and the other with the head and feathers." He said: Ruwayfi' ibn Thabit said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: 'O Ruwayfi', perhaps life will be prolonged for you, so inform the people that whoever ties a knot in his beard, or hangs a bowstring (as an amulet), or cleans himself with the dung or bone of an animal, has disowned what was sent down upon Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.'"
