قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَدِّي يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَخَذَ الْإِدَاوَةَ بَعْدَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ يَتْبَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهَا وَاشْتَكَى أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَبَيْنَا هُوَ يُوَضِّئُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَيْهِ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَالَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ إِنْ وُلِّيتَ أَمْرًا فَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَاعْدِلْ قَالَ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنِّي مُبْتَلًى بِعَمَلٍ لِقَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى ابْتُلِيتُ.
English Translation
He said: Rawh narrated to us, saying: Abu Umayya 'Amr ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, who said: I heard my grandfather relate that Mu'awiya took up the water-skin after Abu Hurayra, following the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with it, when Abu Hurayra fell ill. While he was pouring water for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to perform ablution, he raised his head to him once or twice and said: 'O Mu'awiya, if you are ever given charge of some affair, fear Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and be just.' He said: 'I did not cease to think I would be tried with some position, because of the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, until I was indeed tried with it.'
