حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعَرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ.
English Translation
'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar narrated to us from al-Zuhri from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman: that he saw Mu'awiya delivering a sermon on the pulpit with a hairpiece of false hair in his hand. He said: I heard him say: 'Where are your scholars, O people of Medina? I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbid the like of this, and he said: The Children of Israel were only punished when their women adopted this.'
