English Translation
Abu Salih al-Hakam ibn Musa told us: 'Isa ibn Yunus told us: my father narrated to us, from his father, from Dhu al-Jawshan al-Dibabi, who said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing the colt of a mare of mine called al-Qarha', and I said, "O Muhammad, I have brought you the colt of al-Qarha' for you to take." He said, "I have no need of it. But if you wish, I will give you in exchange for it the choicest of the coats of mail from Badr." I said, "I would not exchange it today for equipment." He said, "I have no need of it." Then he said, "O Dhu al-Jawshan, will you not accept Islam and be among the first people of this matter?" I said, "No." He said, "Why?" I said, "I have seen your people fiercely set upon you." He said, "So how did news of their defeat at Badr reach you?" I said, "It has reached me." He said, "Then we shall give you a gift." I said, "Only if you prevail over the Ka'bah and settle there." He said, "Perhaps, if you live, you will see that." Then he said, "O Bilal, take the man's saddlebag and provision him with some of the 'ajwah dates." When I turned to leave, he said, "Indeed, he is among the best horsemen of Banu 'Amir." He said: By Allah, I was among my family in al-Ghawr when a rider approached, and I said, "What have the people done?" He said, "By Allah, Muhammad has prevailed over the Ka'bah and settled there." I said, "May my mother be bereft of me! If only I had accepted Islam that day, then asked him for al-Hirah, he would have granted it to me." Shayban ibn Abi Shaybah Abu Muhammad told us: Jarir - meaning Ibn Hazim - told us, from Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani, who said: Dhu al-Jawshan came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and gave him a horse as a gift, while he was at that time still a polytheist. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, refused to accept it, then said, "If you wish, you may sell it to me, or would you sell it to me for the choicest of the coats of mail from Badr?" Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Would you be the first to enter into this matter?" He said, "No." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "What prevents you from that?" He said, "I have seen that your people denied you, expelled you, and fought you, so see what you will do: if you prevail over them, I will believe in you and follow you; but if they prevail over you, I will not follow you." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "O Dhu al-Jawshan, perhaps..." and he related the rest of the hadith similarly. Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah told me: 'Isa ibn Yunus told us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Dhu al-Jawshan, who said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after he had finished with Badr, bringing the colt of a mare of mine called al-Qarha', and I said, "O Muhammad..." and he related the rest of the hadith.
