He said: Abd al-Razzaq told us: Dawud ibn Qays al-San'ani informed us, saying: Abdullah ibn Wahb told me, from his father, who said: Fannaj told me, saying: I used to work in al-Daynabadh and cultivate there. Ya'la ibn Umayyah came as governor over Yemen, and with him came men from the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. A man from among those who had come with him came to me while I was in the field directing the water into the crops, and he had walnuts in his sleeve. He sat by a water channel, breaking open some of those walnuts and eating them. Then he gestured to Fannaj and said: O Persian, come here. He said: So I drew near to him, and the man said to Fannaj: Will you undertake for me to plant these walnuts by the water? Fannaj said to him: What benefit would that be to me? The man said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say with these two ears of mine: Whoever plants a tree and patiently tends and cares for it until it bears fruit, he will have, for every single thing taken from its fruit, a reward of charity with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Fannaj said: Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? He said: Yes. Fannaj said: Then I will undertake it. He said: And from that came the walnut trees of al-Daynabadh.
