English Translation
Yazid b. Harun narrated to us: Hammad b. Salamah informed us, from Ali b. Zayd, from Abu Burdah, who said: I passed by al-Rabadhah and there was a tent. I said, "Whose is this?" It was said, "Muhammad b. Maslamah's." So I asked permission and entered upon him, and I said, "May Allah have mercy on you — you have a position of standing in this matter, so why not go out to the people and command and forbid?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'There will be trial, division, and disagreement; when that happens, take your sword to Uhud and strike its flat side against it, break your arrows, cut your bowstring, and sit in your house.' And that has now come to pass." Yazid said once: "'strike it until you break it, then sit in your house until an errant hand comes to you, or Allah, Mighty and Majestic, spares you.' And what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said has come to pass, and I have done what he commanded me." Then he brought down a sword that was hanging on the pole of the tent and drew it, and it was a sword of wood. He said, "I have done what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded me, and I have taken this to frighten people with." Mu'ammal narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Ali b. Zayd, from Abu Burdah, who said: We passed by al-Rabadhah and there was a tent pitched, and he related it. Affan narrated to us: Hammad b. Salamah narrated to us: Ali b. Zayd informed us, from Abu Burdah b. Abi Musa, who said: We passed by al-Rabadhah and there was a tent. I said, "Whose is this?" and he related the hadith.
