حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُبَارَكٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ وَهُوَ أَبُو شُجَاعٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ عَنْ نَاشِرَةَ بْنِ سُمَيٍّ الْيَزَنِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ يَقُولُ فِي يَوْمِ الْجَابِيَةِ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ جَعَلَنِي خَازِنًا لِهَذَا الْمَالِ وَقَاسِمَهُ لَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ بَلْ اللَّهُ يَقْسِمُهُ وَأَنَا بَادِئٌ بِأَهْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ أَشْرَفِهِمْ فَفَرَضَ لِأَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَشْرَةَ آلَافٍ إِلَّا جُوَيْرِيَةَ وَصَفِيَّةَ ومَيْمُونَةَ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْدِلُ بَيْنَنَا فَعَدَلَ بَيْنَهُنَّ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي بَادِئٌ بِأَصْحَابِي الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الْأَوَّلِينَ فَإِنَّا أُخْرِجْنَا مِنْ دِيَارِنَا ظُلْمًا وَعُدْوَانًا ثُمَّ أَشْرَفِهِمْ فَفَرَضَ لِأَصْحَابِ بَدْرٍ مِنْهُمْ خَمْسَةَ آلَافٍ وَلِمَنْ كَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ أَرْبَعَةَ آلَافٍ وَلِمَنْ شَهِدَ أُحُدًا ثَلَاثَةَ آلَافٍ قَالَ وَمَنْ أَسْرَعَ فِي الْهِجْرَةِ أَسْرَعَ بِهِ الْعَطَاءُ وَمَنْ أَبْطَأَ فِي الْهِجْرَةِ أَبْطَأَ بِهِ الْعَطَاءُ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ رَجُلٌ إِلَّا مُنَاخَ رَاحِلَتِهِ وَإِنِّي أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ إِنِّي أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَحْبِسَ هَذَا الْمَالَ عَلَى ضَعَفَةِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَأَعْطَى ذَا الْبَأْسِ وَذَا الشَّرَفِ وَذَا اللَّسَانَةِ فَنَزَعْتُهُ وَأَمَّرْتُ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَمْرِو بْنُ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ وَاللَّهِ مَا أَعْذَرْتَ يَا عُمَرُ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ لَقَدْ نَزَعْتَ عَامِلًا اسْتَعْمَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَغَمَدْتَ سَيْفًا سَلَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَوَضَعْتَ لِوَاءً نَصَبَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَقَدْ قَطَعْتَ الرَّحِمَ وَحَسَدْتَ ابْنَ الْعَمِّ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ إِنَّكَ قَرِيبُ الْقَرَابَةِ حَدِيثُ السِّنِّ مُغْضَبٌ مِنْ ابْنِ عَمِّكَ.
English Translation
Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us: Abdullah - meaning Ibn al-Mubarak - narrated to us: Sa'id ibn Yazid, who is Abu Shuja', informed us, he said: I heard al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Hadrami narrate from Ali ibn Rabah, from Nashirah ibn Sumayy al-Yazani, who said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God, Exalted, be pleased with him, say on the day of al-Jabiyah, while addressing the people: God, Mighty and Sublime, has made me a custodian and distributor of this wealth. Then he said: Rather, God distributes it, and I begin with the family of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then the most eminent of them. So he allotted to the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ten thousand each, except Juwayriyah, Safiyyah, and Maymunah - whereupon A'ishah said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, used to treat us equally; so Umar made them equal too. Then he said: I begin with my Companions, the earliest Emigrants, for we were driven out of our homes unjustly and wrongfully - then the most eminent of them. So he allotted to the people of Badr among them five thousand each, and to those of the Ansar who had witnessed Badr four thousand each, and to those who witnessed Uhud three thousand each. Whoever hastened in emigration, his stipend was hastened; and whoever was slow in emigration, his stipend was delayed - so let no man blame anyone but the place where he tethered his mount. And indeed I apologize to you concerning Khalid ibn al-Walid: I had ordered him to withhold this wealth for the weak among the Emigrants, but he gave it to men of daring, of nobility, and of eloquence, so I removed him and appointed Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah in his place. Abu Amr ibn Hafs ibn al-Mughirah said: By God, you have no excuse, O Umar ibn al-Khattab! You have dismissed a governor appointed by the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, sheathed a sword drawn by the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and lowered a banner raised by the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. You have severed the ties of kinship and envied your cousin. Umar ibn al-Khattab said: You are a close relative, young in age, angered on behalf of your cousin.
