English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us: my father said, as Ibn Ishaq narrated to me, from Ya'qub ibn Utbah, from Muslim ibn Abdullah ibn Jundub al-Juhani, from Jundub ibn Makith al-Juhani, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Ghalib ibn Abdullah al-Kalbi, of Kalb Layth, to the Banu Mulawwah at al-Kadid, and ordered him to raid them. So he set out, and I was in his raiding party. We proceeded until, when we were at Qudayd, we met there al-Harith ibn Malik, known as Ibn al-Barsa' al-Laythi, and we seized him. He said: I have only come to accept Islam. Ghalib ibn Abdullah said: If you have indeed come as a Muslim, a day and a night's confinement will not harm you; and if you are otherwise, we will make sure of you. He said: So he bound him securely, then left a black man who was with us in charge of him, saying: Stay with him until we pass by you again; if he resists you, cut off his head. He said: Then we proceeded until we came to the bottom of al-Kadid, and we camped there in the late afternoon after 'Asr. My companions sent me out as a lookout, so I made for a hill that would give me a view over the encampment, and I lay flat upon it - this was at Maghrib time. A man among them came out and looked, and saw me lying flat on the hill. He said to his wife: By God, I see something dark on this hill that I did not see earlier in the day; look and see whether the dogs have dragged off some of your belongings. She looked and said: No, by God, I am missing nothing. He said: Then hand me my bow and two arrows from my quiver. She handed them to him, and he shot me with an arrow, which lodged in my side. I pulled it out and set it down, and did not move. Then he shot me with another, which lodged in the top of my shoulder; I pulled it out and set it down, and did not move. He said to his wife: By God, my two arrows have struck it, and if it were an animal it would have moved; when morning comes, look for my two arrows and take them, lest the dogs chew them up on me. We gave them respite until their livestock had gone out and returned, and had been milked and settled for the night, or had quieted down, and a portion of the night had passed, then we launched the raid upon them. We killed those of them we killed, and drove off the livestock, then turned back, making our way home. The people's crier went out to their tribe seeking help, and we hurried on until we passed by al-Harith ibn al-Barsa' and his guard, and took him along with us. Then the people's crier reached them, and there came against us [a force] we had no power to withstand, until, when there was nothing between us and them but the bottom of the valley, a flash flood came and separated us from them, sent by God, Exalted, from wherever He willed - we had never before seen such rain or such a flood. It came with such force that no one could stand against it, and indeed we saw them standing, watching us, unable to advance, while we drove the herd on swiftly until we brought it up onto al-Mashallal, then drove it down away from us, and so we outpaced the people with what was in our hands.
