حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ أُمُورًا كُنْتُ أَتَحَنَّثُ بِهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقَالَ أَسْلَمْتَ عَلَى مَا أَسْلَفْتَ وَالتَّحَنُّثُ التَّعَبُّدُ.
English Translation
Uthman ibn Umar told us: Yunus informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, that Hakim ibn Hizam informed him, saying: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of matters I used to devote myself to in the Age of Ignorance?" He said, "You have embraced Islam together with what you did before." And devotion [al-tahannuth] means worship.
