حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ و سَمِعْت أَبِي مَرَّةً يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الطُّفَيْلِ الْبَكَّائِيُّ الْعَامِرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلَامٌ فَسَمَّاهُ مُحَمَّدًا فَقُلْنَا لَا نَدَعُكَ تُسَمِّيهِ مُحَمَّدًا بِاسْمِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَتَى الرَّجُلُ بِابْنِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ وَإِنِّي سَمَّيْتُهُ بِاسْمِكَ فَأَبَى قَوْمِي أَنْ يَدْعُونِي قَالَ بَلَى تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي وَلَا تَكَنَّوْا بِكُنْيَتِي فَإِنِّي قَاسِمٌ أَقْسِمُ بَيْنَكُمْ.
English Translation
Ziyad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Tufayl told us - Abdullah said: and I heard my father once say: Ziyad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Tufayl al-Bakka'i al-Amiri told us, Mansur told us, from Salim, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: A boy was born to a man among us, and he named him Muhammad. We said: We will not let you name him Muhammad, after the name of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So the man brought his son to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, a boy was born to me and I named him after you, but my people refuse to let me do so. He said: Yes, name yourselves after my name, but do not take my byname, for I am a distributor who distributes among you.
