حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَطْلُعُ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلٌ أَوْ قَالَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلٌ يُرِيدُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَطْلُعُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَوْ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَابٌّ يُرِيدُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَطْلُعُ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ عَلِيًّا اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ عَلِيًّا قَالَ فَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.
English Translation
Yazid informed us, Sharik ibn 'Abdullah informed us, from 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, "A man will appear before you" — or he said, "a man will come in to you" — "who is a man of Paradise." Then Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, came. Then he said, "A young man will appear before you" — or "will come in to you" — "who is a man of Paradise." Then 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, came. Then he said, "A man of Paradise will appear before you. O Allah, make him 'Ali! O Allah, make him 'Ali!" Then 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, came.
